You'll be able to tell your friends: "I live over on Perry Street, between Waverly Place and West Fourth." Street names that are musical sounds to anyone who dreams of living in the West Village. This quiet, picturesque block is utterly enchanting, lined with brick rowhouses and mature blossoming trees on both sides. And this apartment is just a gem.
An entry foyer leads one into a comfortably sized living room with windows facing south onto Perry receiving glorious sunlight. A second bedroom is windowed, as is the bathroom. The hardwood floors, plaster walls and ceiling with original moldings have all been brought to tip top, beautifuland ready to use condition. The kitchen and bathroom areas are opportunities to design the West Village look you want. Two original fireplaces, built-in wood shelving and two large walk-in closets complete this charming home.
Located in the heart of the West Village, 29 Perry Street is an intimate, 10-unit walk-up co-op established in 1985. Originally built in 1871 with twice the number of apartments, the building began a new life in the 1920s when it was purchased by the Church of St. John the Evangelist, around the corner on Waverly Place. Near the turn century, the church was in danger of being swamped by teeming tenements, rundown boarding houses, and indifferent neighbors. In an effort to keep stable the area adjoining the church property, the vestry began acquiring one by one the surrounding buildings on Perry Street and West 11th Street, remodeling them with apartments of distinction and charm, and renting them out to artists and creatives. This became known as St. John's Colony, which included a communal garden in the center of the block adjoining the rear of the church. It was around this time that 29 Perry's entrance, lobby and apartments were remodeled into their current form with two apartments per floor.
